Requirements
The program is open to juniors in good standing at consortium and non-consortium
institutions, with priority going to well-qualified consortium applicants.
Applicants must have completed at least one year of Japanese language study
at their home institutions by June of the year of application, and at least
one other Japan-related course. Applicants should have a grade-point-average
of "B" or better, and have earned "B" or better in Japanese language courses. Finally, applicants should possess the
flexibility to adapt to a different culture, the social and emotional maturity
necessary for living with a host family, as well as the intellectual sophistication
and seriousness to benefit fully from the program. Admission is competitive.
Application Notes:
- In order to apply to AKP, you must have a passport valid through September 2009. Applications without proof of a valid passport will not be considered.
- Applicants are encouraged to use the online application to submit their personal data, personal statements and faculty recommendations. Additional materials must be submitted to the AKP Campus Representative or theAKP Office (for non-consortium students). Hard copy applications are still accepted, but applicants should not submit both paper and online copies of any material.
- Applications for the 2008-2009 Program are due January 18, 2008.
Consortium students should complete their application materials in consultation with their AKP Campus Representative, and submit completed applications to the Representative by the application deadline.
Non-consortium applicants may consult with the Program Administrator or their advisor, and should submit completed applications directly to the AKP office at Oberlin College.
Both consortium and non-consortium students should also make a point of discussing their plan of study with the Dean of the Office of Study Abroad at their home institution prior to applying.
Application Fee, Interviews and Deposit
The application fee for students at consortium colleges is $10; for non-consortium
applicants, the fee is $50. Late applications are subject to a $50 fee. Interviews
will be conducted in February. Each applicant will be interviewed by a member
of the AKP Board of Directors. Results will be announced in early March. Enrollment
is contingent upon the applicant's maintenance of good academic standing. To
enroll, accepted students must send a $500 deposit to the Associated Kyoto
Program's financial agent, Smith College. This deposit will be returned
to the student in yen after arrival in Kyoto. It is forfeited if the student
does not enroll in the program.More Information
