AKP Scholarships

AKP Scholarship Opportunities

We believe that you will quickly discover the variety of exciting activities that Kyoto and the program have to offer you. We recognize, however, that there will be added costs associated with studying and living in Kyoto. To help offset these extra costs, AKP offers two supplementary scholarships: the AKP Freeman Grant and the Student Research Grant. With these grants, students who study on AKP are eligible to receive a minimum of $2500 during their study in Kyoto.

AKP Freeman Grants:

Thanks to the generosity of the Freeman Foundation of New York, the AKP is able to provide supplementary financial support to our students. Each 2008-2009 participant is eligible to receive a $2000 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) Grant, regardless of citizenship, outside funding and financial need. In addition, AKP will distribute a Loss of Earnings Grant (LOEG) to students who provide proof of financial need and who are not receiving other scholarship monies funded by the Freeman Foundation. The number of students who qualify for the LOEG determines the amount of the award. Both grants will be disbursed monthly directly to students' postal savings accounts. Students should discuss this financial assistance with Financial Aid and Student Accounts Offices at their home institutions. The AKP Administrative Office a Oberlin College administrates AKP Freeman Grants. Applications will be sent to enrolled students in June.

AKP Research Grants:

Students may apply for AKP Research Grants which will provide up to ¥50,000 for reimbursable costs associated with an approved independent research project. The application procedure for the Student Research Grants will be determined by the Resident Director, who will require students to submit a formal application that describes the project and includes a proposed budget. Further information and applications will be provided during the Kyoto Orientation program in September. This is an excellent opportunity to undertake research or obtain materials for a senior thesis or research project.

Summer Internship Grants:

AKP offers a few summer grants to students who wish to extend their stay in Japan and participate in internships with Japanese companies and organizations. AKP hopes to provide support to 8 to 10 students each year.
