The Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) is pleased to announce our 2008-09 American Studies Faculty Fellowship Program. Under the provisions of the American Studies Fellowship Program, AKP will support one or more faculty fellows each year to teach and conduct research as visiting professors in the Graduate School of American Studies at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan.

The Associated Kyoto Program is a study-in-Japan program for undergraduates from the sponsoring American institutions: Amherst, Bates, Bucknell, Carleton, Colby, Connecticut, Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, Oberlin, Pomona, Smith, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Williams, and Whitman. As part of its continuing relationship with Doshisha University, the AKP has initiated the American Studies Faculty Fellowship Program to support American Studies faculty from consortium schools to teach and conduct research at Doshisha University.

Eligibility:

Applicants should be regular faculty members at an AKP member institution who have a strong background in teaching and research in the area of American Studies. All teaching and related duties are conducted in English, and no knowledge of Japanese language is required. Specialists in all fields of American Studies are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to those areas designated by Doshisha University as being particularly desirable in a given academic year.

Responsibilities:

Fellows will be expected to teach one course in English in their specialty, to advise and work with students on special projects as needed, and to participate in colloquia and American Studies Program activities. Additionally, each fellow will implement a program or research or study in Kyoto designed to enhance his or her professional development

Term:

The normal term of the fellowship will correspond with a semester of the Japanese academic year calendar: the school year begins April 1 and the first semester ends in mid-July; fall session begins October 1 and the final examination period extends into February. Fellows are usually able to finish their course in mid-January in time to return to the US for a spring semester that begins in late January. A full semester lasts approximately 16 weeks, but vacations and holidays reduce the class meetings to approximately twenty-eight sessions of 90 minutes each over the course of a semester. In special circumstances it may be possible to teach an accelerated course over a shorter period of time, for instance during the summer break, but the expectation is that most fellows will teach a single course during a semester appointment. An accelerated course would be expected to cover the material of a semester in the abbreviated period.

Housing & Stipend:

Doshisha University will provide each Fellow with free housing and office space. Utilities, health insurance, and personal incidental expenses will be the responsibility of the Fellow. AKP will provide compensation of $1,000 per week (up to $17,000 maximum) for the length of the Fellow’s stay paid in dollars in the United States to the Fellow's home institutiuon, plus a $2,000 travel allowance. No dependent allowances will be paid.

Doshisha University

Doshisha University is a prestigious private university of over 20,000 students located in Kyoto, the traditional capital of Japan, and still one of the country's most attractive cities. Adjacent to the old Imperial Palace and graced with shade trees and vintage buildings, the Doshisha campus is one of the most beautiful in Japan. The Doshisha Center for American Studies was established in 1958, and inaugurated a master's program in 1991 and a Ph.D. program in 1993. The Center, which has a multinational faculty and student body, emphasizes field work and an interdisciplinary, comparative approach. Many of its courses are taught in English. Doshisha University was established in 1875 by Niijima Jo (1843-1890) , a Christian educator who graduated from Amherst College in 1870 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1874.
