American Studies Faculty Fellowships

The Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) is pleased to announce special American Studies Faculty Fellowship opportunities for 2010-11.  Under the provisions of the American Studies Fellowship Program, AKP will support one or more faculty fellows to teach a course in the Graduate School of American Studies at Doshisha University, in Kyoto, Japan.  The American Studies Fellow may teach a course of 1-4 credits in the Graduate Program over the course of part or all of a semester.  Depending on the length of stay, the Fellow may have an opportunity to conduct research while in Japan. Fellows will be expected to teach in English in their specialty, and to meet with and offer advice to students as appropriate, and to participate in American Studies Program activities during their stay in Kyoto.

Applicants should be regular faculty members at an AKP member institution with a strong background in teaching and research in the area of American Studies.  Applications are not limited to faculty with appointments in American Studies departments or programs. Specialists in all disciplines are encouraged to apply, as long as the proposed course is one that could be considered part of an American Studies program.  Preference will be given to those areas designated by Doshisha University as being particularly desirable in a given academic year.  All teaching and related duties are conducted in English, and fluency in Japanese language is not required.

Doshisha University will provide each Fellow with free housing and office space.  AKP will provide compensation of $1,500 per week for the length of the Fellow’s stay up to a maximum of $25,000 paid in US dollars to the Fellow's home institution. Round-trip travel to Japan, utilities for Doshisha housing, health insurance, and personal incidental expenses will be the responsibility of the Fellow.  No dependent allowances will be provided.

The Faculty Fellowship Program is designed to provide AKP students from consortium institutions with a strong and diverse set of courses that will enhance their background in Japanese studies, as well as to increase the quality and visibility of Japanese studies on consortium campuses, and support the scholarly activities of faculty members at sponsoring institutions.

The Fellows presence in Kyoto must correspond to a time when Doshisha University is in session and able to host a visitor.  The school year begins April 1 and the first semester ends in late July, and the second semester begins around September 20 with the final examination period extending into February.  For courses, a full semester lasts approximately 17 weeks, but vacations and holidays reduce the total number of class meetings.  Sessions are 90 minutes long.  In special circumstances it may be possible to teach an accelerated course over a shorter period of time, for instance during the summer break, but ideally the accelerated course would cover the material of a semester in the abbreviated time.
