Japanese Language Courses
The goal of our language program is to improve your communication skills and to assist you in achieving higher proficiency in written and spoken Japanese. Therefore, the program encourages you to speak Japanese not only in Japanese class, but also with your host family, on the Doshisha campus, and while participating in cultural activities so that you will acquire the habit of communicating in Japanese. Please keep in mind that practice is the key to improved proficiency.
- Students arrive at AKP from different home institutions that use different texts and teaching approaches in their Japanese language classes, so you should not expect the Japanese Language Program at AKP to serve as a sequential continuation of what you studied at your home institution. Instead, think of it as an entirely new way of enhancing your language proficiency, in which a variety of teaching materials are combined with your daily life in Kyoto to reinforce what you have already learned and further develop your skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
- There are occasions when a student is moved from one language level to another. The language instructors will consult first with the Japanese Language Program Coordinator, who will meet with the Resident Director before any class changes become final.
- Remember that not all of your language training takes place in the classroom. In your daily interactions with your host family, conversation partners at Doshisha University, fellow AKP students, elective course instructors, and the Kyoto Center staff, you will have opportunities to practice patterns that you have learned in class. We encourage you to strive constantly to add new words and phrases to your working vocabulary. Read advertisements on buses and subways. Ask about kanji that you do not recognize. Take advantage of the resources that surround you every day. Become a language fanatic.
Students will be divided into four language classes in the 2019–2020 academic year. Each group will meet daily for two 50-minute sessions at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. In addition, students will take a one-hour elective Japanese class meeting at 11:00 a.m. once a week. The content of the Japanese language elective classes for the 2019-2020 academic year will be announced at the orientation. In the past, AKP offered Extensive Reading すいすい読もう (すいすいよもう), Topic Discussions どんどん話そう（どんどんはなそう), and Kanji Buildup 漢字寺子屋 (かんじてらこや） classes.
