Application Process

AKP is open to college juniors and first-semester seniors in good standing at consortium and non-consortium institutions within the U.S.

Academic Requirements

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Average Japanese GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Completion of at least one other Japan-related course (non-language) before the program begins

If one or more of the above requirements are not met, the AKP representative for the applicant's home institution (or, for non-consortium applicants, their advisor) should send an email briefly explaining their student's circumstances to [email protected]

Passport Requirements

Applicants must have a passport that will remain valid through the end of the program period they are applying to. For example, a Fall 2020 applicant must have a passport that expires no earlier than January 2021.

  1. Click on the Apply Now button at the top of this page.
  2. Create a username and password for AKP's application portal.
  3. Login to the portal.
  4. Gather and submit your application materials. For students applying for the January deadline, we strongly encourage you to gather the necessary materials before leaving campus for Winter Break.
  5. Once you turn in all materials and all recommendation letters are received, AKP will reach out to schedule an interview between you and an AKP staff member.

The materials, forms, and questionnaires mentioned below as well as additional instructions are available after creating an application on the AKP application portal.
